Lightworks Stories is a contemporary and aspirational children’s book brand, which aims to encourage children to see beauty in the world, inspire them to dream as far as their imagination allows and to spread some hope and positivity. Being black owned, we consider it a privilege to be able to serve communities with products that bring hope, light and confidence into the lives of many children worldwide.

As a child growing up in the UK, there were limited choices of books which reflected how I looked and the few ones I had were my treasures, I would read them over and over again, year after year not really becoming tired of them, why? because I was fascinated seeing a little girl in the book who looked similar me. What is interesting is as an adult I still remember these stories and the positive messages still resonate with me, what is even more remarkable though, is many years later statistics show that less than 1% of children’s books in the UK feature a black lead character which prompted reflection on my part. With this in mind, it was important for me to create something of value where my son and others can see themselves represented in a positive light. I know first-hand the importance of representation and it is paramount that children see themselves reflected often and in positive narratives. This positive enaction should be visible across all spheres of life which is the idea for our debut book titled Durotimi the Champion which is designed to encourage young boys to believe in themselves, provide excitement, laughter and spread love.
